Linear Actuator I have always wondered what a linear actuator is. I always thought that a linear actuator could be some giant machine with a use that I couldnˇ¦t even imagine. Another thing I thought that a linear actuator could be is some important piece of equipment used at a power plant to produce electricity. I decided to do some research so that I can figure out what a linear actuator actually is and it turns out that my guesses were far off. A linear actuator is a device that can lift and move stuff in a linear direction. That is why it is called a LINEAR actuator. It is actually quite interesting how they work. There are a few different types of linear actuators. I will attempt to explain how a mechanical linear actuator, an electro-mechanical actuator, as well as a hydraulic actuator. First of all is the mechanical linear actuator. This device is put in motion by have a person turn a valve that rotates. Kind of like a valve that controls the water for your hose outside. As you turn this valve, the linear actuator turns this rotational motion into a linear motion. The linear actuator uses gears and screws to convert this motion. If you donˇ¦t really understand what I am talking about, I will try to explain how a linear actuator works using an example. Say you had a nut and a long bolt. You screw the bolt all the way into the nut. So what the linear actuator would do is it would hold the nut in one place. Then as the screw is unscrewed, it moves upward. It is a smart idea and a good invention. An electro-mechanical actuator uses the very same concept except it uses an electric motor to supply the rotary action. That way you donˇ¦t have to do it manually, you can simply press a button to control the linear actuator. Another type of linear actuator is the hydraulic actuator. This uses a piston inside a tube. Then the hydraulic actuator will control and pressure and change it as needed to move the piston. This will make the piston rise and fall. This is also a great idea to build a linear actuator. As you can see, a linear actuator is a very neat invention. There is a different type of linear actuator for different needs of work. That way people can select the linear actuator needed to fit their specifications.
